Hollande's Fixative Recipe

  1. Stock solution
    • 75g Copper acetate (cupric)
    • 3L Distilled water
    • 120g Picric acid
    • 300ml Formaldehyde
    • 45ml Glacial acetic acid
  • Note: Small biopsies fix in 2 to 4 hours, large specimens may need up to 3 days.
  • Caution: Picric acid can become explosive if allowed to dry out and is toxic through skin
    exposure. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen. Glacial acetic acid is caustic. Use personal protective equipement, prepare under hood in a well ventilated area. Consult with appropriate safety officials at your institution for proper procedures and disposal.
