Zenker's Fixative Recipe

  1. Stock solution
    • 50g Mercuric chloride
    • 25g Potassium dichromate
    • 10g Sodium sulfate
    • 1L Distilled water
  2. Working solution
    • 95ml Zenker’s stock
    • 5ml Glacial acetic acid

Note: Small biopsies fix in 2 to 4 hours, large specimens may need up to 3 days.

Caution: Mercuric chloride is a severe skin and eye irritant. Potassium dichromate is toxic by inhalation of dust and by ingestion. Glacial acetic acid is caustic. Use personal protective equipement, prepare under hood in a well ventilated area. Consult with appropriate safety officials at your institution for proper procedures and disposal.
